Alle Dalitoy, Katpadi Style Ginger Dal
"Ginger" always reminds me of my Dad. He just loved ginger and wanted to add ginger in every kind of food. Back when me, my brothers and sisters were little, we just hated ginger and would unanimously protest. But now, Ginger gives me sweet memories of my Dad, its a reminder of his love and affection and his hard work to raise a big family.
Dalitoy is one of the signature Konkani dishes. Usually dalitoy is made with hing as in here.
I had never tasted any other kinds of dal till I had to live away from my home for my studies. I was living as a paying guest in one of the Konkani household in Udupi, the lady was from katpadi, a small village near Udupi. She used to make dalitoy with Ginger. I never liked it in the beginning, as I had this preconception that anything with ginger doesn't taste good. But I had to eat it without any choice. After a few meals, I started liking it and to my surprise, now sometimes cook that too.
Here is the recipe
1 cup tuvar dal
2 cup water
4 green chillies
2 tsp oil
2 red chillies, broken in pieces
1/2 tsp mustard
1 sprig curry leaves
Wash and rinse tuvar dal. Cook in the pressure cooker till soft. Transfer to the sauce pan, add slit green chillies, finely chopped ginger and salt, bring it to a boil, then simmer on low flame for 10mins.
For the seasoning, heat oil, splutter mustard seeds, add red chillies and curry leaves. Pour it over the dal. Adjust salt.
Serve with rice and pickles or papad.
