Alle Dalitoy, Katpadi Style Ginger Dal

Ginger Dal
"Ginger" always reminds me of my Dad. He just loved ginger and wanted to add ginger in every kind of food. Back when me, my brothers and sisters were little, we just hated ginger and would unanimously protest. But now, Ginger gives me sweet memories of my Dad, its a reminder of his love and affection and his hard work to raise a big family.

Dalitoy is one of the signature Konkani dishes. Usually dalitoy is made with hing as in here.
I had never tasted any other kinds of dal till I had to live away from my home for my studies. I was living as a paying guest in one of the Konkani household in Udupi, the lady was from katpadi, a small village near Udupi. She used to make dalitoy with Ginger. I never liked it in the beginning, as I had this preconception that anything with ginger doesn't taste good. But I had to eat it without any choice. After a few meals, I started liking it and to my surprise, now sometimes cook that too.

Here is the recipe
1 cup tuvar dal
2 cup water
1/2"cube ginger
4 green chillies
salt
2 tsp oil
2 red chillies, broken in pieces
1/2 tsp mustard
1 sprig curry leaves

Wash and rinse tuvar dal. Cook in the pressure cooker till soft. Transfer to the sauce pan, add slit green chillies, finely chopped ginger and salt, bring it to a boil, then simmer on low flame for 10mins.
For the seasoning, heat oil, splutter mustard seeds, add red chillies and curry leaves. Pour it over the dal. Adjust salt.

Serve with rice and pickles or papad.

  9. I love the way that you have presented the rice Manjula! Beautiful. I have made daalitoy several times since I discovered this dish- it is delicious, easy, and comforting- but have never heard of this variation with ginger. So, on my next daalitoy craving I will try this recipe.

Strange how we re-think memories as we get older isn't it? I, too, have found myself preparing dishes that remind me of childhood days and before I found grey hairs. ;-)

  10. Manjula, we always make dalitoy with ginger. I was so surprised when I came across the SK style dalitoy without ginger for the first time. It led to lots of discussion on my blog when I posted our style :). I don't like ginger pieces that we can taste in this, but yes, I love the aroma it gives to thoy.
I never tasted it with ukdo tandul sheet. I will have to try sometime :).

  32. Hi Manjula,

Long time since you updated your blog. I hope everything is going OK with you.
Personally, even I dislike ginger. My mom used to serve "Limbiya Kanchi" with "Payaj" and she used add "Alle" to "Kanchi".
Anyways, do you use "Narayal Tayal" (Coconut Oil) for "Phana"?
I really love the aroma and flavor it brings to the food. Even though I realise it is bit unhealthy.
I used to cook long time back. And whenever I used to make "Phoodis" (Fritters) I used to deep fry them in regular oil and then drizzle them with a dash of coconut oil for flavor.

Anyways, looking forward to hearing from you soon.

  33. the recipe is definitely authentic and yummy. As a variant, while cooking the daal in the cooker, you can add 2 - 3 tomatoes. The tomatoes can be cut into 4s.
