Brown Lentil Rice

My dear readers, Thank you for all the emails and inquiries as to why I was missing from action. I just needed sometime for myself to rejuvenate and start with the cooking experiments again. The good news is that I have been cooking more health recipes with a Konkani twist. You will see much more whole grain recipes in the future.

Lentil Rice

Here is a recipe that my family loved the most - Brown Lentil Rice.

1 cup white rice
1 cup brown lentils
3 cups of water
2 cups crisp veggies like carrots, green beans, lima beans, edamame
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp hing
2 tsp oil
curry leaves

Soak the lentils for 30mins. In the meanwhile, prepare the veggies. Chop the veggies into bite size. Wash rice and keep aside.
In the pressure cooker or a rice cooker, heat the oil. Pop cumin, add curry leaves, hing and chilli powder. Fry till fragrant. Add coriander & cumin powders mix thoroughly. Add the veggies, lentil, rice and water. Add salt. Cook for 3 whistles. Let it cool down on its own. Do not open the cooker in the hustle, it might end up mushy.

You can use frozen mixed veggies available in supermarket too. But do not use veggies like cauliflower, bellpepper that cook faster, they tend to get mushy when cooked under pressure.

Serve with Curd or Raitha.

Enjoy the delicious hearty one pot meal!

Hi Manjula,

Nice to see you blogging again. Couple of question regarding this receipe.
1. Is this same as "Khichadi"?
2. Would adding little bit of "Garam Masala" add some extra punch to it?
Do let me know.

Thanks,

Nithin

Hi Nithin,
1. In Konkani recipes Kichidi is a sweet dish made with moong dal/cha dal/rice and jaggery or rice!
If you mean the Gujarati Kichadi, this tastes very different than the kichadi I had in the Gujarati restaurant. The brown lentils are very crisp and dont get mushy easily. Soaking them for 30 mins results in firm but fully cooked lentils. The grains remain separate and dry more like pulav than the kichadi.
You can soak the lentils longer and add more water and make this mushy like the kichadi.
2. Yes, use ur imagination. I use different combination of spices every time. I used hing instead of garam masala, to make it taste more Konkani-ish. Garam masala is a big No in Konkani recipes.

Hi Manjula,

Yes. I was refering to North Indian or Gujrati "Khichidi". I know Konkani Khichidi. I prefer the "suger" version than the jaggery one. If I am not mistaken, khichidi is served during one of the days during Kodiyal Teru.

Best,

Nithin
