Molavees

"moLavees" Yes, it is a Konkani dish. Probably one of the recipes, in the verge of extinction. When my mother-in-law mentioned it, I wasn't sure she was talking about a Konkani dish. We were talking about the dishes from our childhood, and she happened to recollect this dish. My MIL's mother was from Kerala and this must have been a dish with Keralite influence.

Molavees is a dal with a silky texture, spiced with lots of Pepper and pinch of turmeric. It is very aromatic and has a exotic feel to it.

1 cup tuvar dal
1 tsp pepper powder
1/4 tsp turmeric
1/4 cup shredded coconut, fresh or frozen

1 medium size potato, diced
1 raw plantain, diced
2 green chillies
1 red chilly, broken into pieces, optional
1 sprig curry leaves
1/4 tsp mustard seeds

Cook the tuvar dal in a pressure cooker.
In a sauce pan, bring some water to a boil and add diced potatoes and plantain. Add some salt to the veggies. Cover and cook till they are cooked but retain the crispiness of the veggies.
Add cooked dal to the veggies, add slit green chillies, turmeric, coconut and pepper powder. Bring it to a rolling boil, and simmer for 5 minutes till all the flavors mix well. Adjust salt and pepper.

For the seasoning, heat 1 tsp oil, splutter mustard seeds, add curry leaves and red chilly. Garnish the dal.
