Karate Kismuri (Bitter Gourd Kosumbari)

Karate Kismuri

Many of us hate Bitter Gourd, Karate in Konkani. But there are many recipes that hide the very bitter taste of it and turn it into an appetizing tasty dish.

I often make this Kosumbari with Bitter Gourd and coconut. Another recipe is the Bitter Gourd Rings which I posted in the past. I often make either of these for lunch along with rice and dal.

2 Bitter Gourd/Bitter Melon
1/2 onion
1/2 cup coconut
1/2 tsp coriander
1/2 tsp jeera
3 roasted red chillies
small piece tamarind
oil for deep frying

Chop the bitter gourd into small cubes. Add 1/2 tsp salt and mix well. Set aside for 15 mins. Heat oil in kadai for deep frying. Squeeze the bitter gourd pieces and add to hot oil. It might sizzle at the beginning. Fry till golden brown. Drain on a paper towel.

Grind together coconut, coriander, cumin, red chillies and tamarind into a rough powder, do not add water. In a bowl, mix together the ground coconut, chopped onions and the bitter gourd pieces. Let it rest for a while, then adjust salt. The bitter gourd pieces have salt in them, so take care when adjusting salt.

This is new to me! You're right about people not liking this because of its bitter taste...I only eat this if it is coated with Jaggery, but this is worth a try!

Asha, Trupti,
Yes, this is a very different bitter gourd recipe.

Oh, Thank you HariPriya for reminding me of onions. I forgot to mention that you could also add some onions into it. Updated the post now

Nice recipe Manjula and lovely picture. Thanks for posting all authentic konkani recipes.

Manjula, this kismuri is very different than what we make. We add lots of raw onion and no grinding involved. I am sure your version also tastes good, will try sometime. Thanks.

hagalkai(karate) dish looks great Manju. Love all the konkani recipes. I had my neighbours in M'lore who were all konkanis and I used to die for thier food, may it be anything.
Thank you so much for sharing all these recipes dear.
